Interesting name to the town. Also interesting that you chose an area very similar to New England (except without the very tall mountain range).

Suggestions for ominous music for the soundtrack?

Just realized that the old album Trespass, by Genesis, has a number of tracks with at least some relevance to the mood of this story... in the titles, at least.

• Looking For Someone
• Stagnation
• Dusk
• The Knife

The latter's lyrics have a chorus which states quite boldly,

Some of you
are going to die
martyrs of course

which one hopes isn't how it turns out for our intrepid three.

Oh, come on now. What could POSSIBLY happen? Two old guys and a salamander on a camping trip, bit of engineering work...nothing to worry about.

BTW, Joe - yes, the UP is a lot like northern New England. Lots of small bodies of water, small towns and not a lot of civilization. The terrain is quite similar as it's all glaciation-shaped. I was just up in and around Tamworth, NH camping with my daughter's family over Labor Day and did a lot of hiking and rock climbing while I was there, and was thinking of this at the time.

EDIT: Town name was a composite of small town names...usually got named after some local event or geological feature. Then you get east, west or whatever when one batch of settlers gets browned-off at another batch and moves away - 2 miles.

I wonder if one of the suits is pulling a white mutiny, and seeing that it will be properly dealt with without actually mentioning it . . .

To be honest, that was well covered when Sterling went on about "a guy's spa day" in 'Reunion'. SOmething about drooling over weapons manuals and tool porn, then going to the range and blowing several hundred holes in targets, then a manicure with Go-Jo and a nail brush.

Speaking of weapons manuals, just added two crew-served mortar manuals to the library - found them in an antique shop in Amherst, NH. So, not at all inaccurate...

A coupla two-tree tings:

1. Most towns in the UP are either named after people or have weird Native American names. Think "Lake Wirthamonsta" or something to that effect. Of course, there are plenty of lakes that have no name (Lake 500 or what not). And falls are definitely possible, but not Niagara like - think the long, flowing type.

2. I'd wonder what all that iron ore up there would do for a mage? Would it have an amplification effect - akin to feedback from a speaker, or would it have a deadening affect? Either way, do recall that most of the UP is rather lousy with it - if not with other minerals of similar extraction (copper is the flavor here in my neck of the North Woods).

3. Sarge: we have a saying here in MONW Wisconsin. The main street running through my little "city" is Wisconsin Highway 64. It runs from Stillwater, MN all the way east to Marinette, WI and the mouth of the Menominee River (the southermost point of the UP). The saying we have is this: "North of 64, South of the Mason-Dixon." My friend, if you think your Appalachian roots were rednecks, you ain't been to the UP. They get poked fun at by Wisconsinites (Da Yoopers, for one), and though there's no truth to the rumor that some of the UP's high schools have "Dueling Banjos" as their fight song... well, it's damn close.

Don't remember offhand. i'll check them tonight when I get home and let you know but I'm thinking 81MM. I grabbed them because:

a) they were a whole dollar each,
b) they actually had tactics information in them (how to use, so to speak).

I have ODD tastes in literature.

1. Thanks! Will keep that in mind. Familiar with the falls you mention - while I was in NH I climbed a set of falls called Diana's Baths. See HERE. The type can be truly striking. My daughter yelled at me for climbing them...

EDIT: Understood on the Indian origin on the place name - city I grew up in was named for the falls that ran through it - the Naragansett Indian word for Thundermist. Not sure, however, that I might have fgone for something tongue-in-cheek like West Mooseandsquirrel or something similar...safer to do what I did and not likely to mess up the suspension of disbelief.

2. DInk and I had discussions on that. Of the four flavours of mage (earth, air, fire, water) Al is an Earth Mage. If anything it would under normal circumstances give him a minor boost.

3. Sounds like New Hampshire...

There is a town near here called Spirit Falls, up by Ogema.

Not that odd . . .

I still need the 60mm and 120mm manuals, though I do have the one for the 60mm as modified to a subcaliber device for the four-duece.
