I guess revealing the truth would be a bit of a good news/bad news deal... Yep, your mom is still alive. Nope, she never let you know before (she had her reasons.) Yep, your wife is still alive. Nope, she never let you know she had not actually died (she had her reasons.) Yep, you now have a sister. Yep, the paranormal world is real. Yep, your step-father is several thousand years old. Oh, and so is your daughter, by the way...

That's why "the bird" is in quotes. Nothing says it has to be a turkey... with all the different types of paras, and sphinxes being at the top of the food chain, who knows what they would cook for Christmas... After all, they do have quite the appetite, so a mere turkey might not be enough...

Neil went back to his study for a quick phone call- there he found the 1916 Crosley upright phone he had restored himself. Taking the earpiece from the disconnect hook, he dialed the number- the chatter-clack of the rotary dial went into a digital translator in the ringer box, allowing the number to be requested in a short pulse.

Of course, texting was out of the question.

On the third ring, the intended party picked up the phone on the other end.
"Dan you old buzzard- this is Neil... well, I want the three piece meal, dark meat, extra crispy with slaw and spuds on the side... heh... THAT will be a cold day in hell... well, I suppose you heard the news?... yea, I'm good with it... naw, there's no worries there- she's a sphinx... yea, I know- kinda makes a shotgun useless... so how did he...?... oh...OH!... really?... WHAT?!? He gave my name as credit in the bibliography? Well, yea- but Phix was interviewed by him as well, why didn't... YOU'RE KIDDING!... so, let me get this straight- Howard wrote a full, detailed explanation of Sphinx society, and it's selling best amongst those who see it as FICTION?... wow... who'da thought... we met at Buck and Kathy's wedding... that double wedding with Alan and Jin, the ex-golem... huh, many moons ago... yea, well, we hit it off, he was quite taken by Dixie- she was not even a year as I recall... yea, that was back when Paul Stookey was still alive... I miss him... he sang at my wedding as well... the library... anyways, I gotta run, just wanted to quick touch base with ya-I gotta sixteen-year-old who's gonna molt out of shear frustration if I don't take her shopping right soon. Give my regards to your ever-lovin'... will do... Bye,"

Neil will not eat an intelligent, sentient creature- that amounts to cannibalism in his book. That Sphinxes are cannibalistic in their dominance stratification is of minor importance to him, but he will not partake. He is a Roman, and tends to view things in a rather practical manner- if Phix kills and devours a co-worker because she felt it was necessary, that's one thing- but a family dinner, especially one concerning a holiday, requires true 'prey' as the main course.

... he IS concerned about what might happen should Dixie take sufficient offence to a boy, however... that could make for bad relations in the community... and if appetites are an issue, you cook several birds... (pull up to a KFC window- 'What will be your order?'- 'hmmm- the 20 piece family meal, grilled, white and dark, potatoes and gravy, corn, slaw and beans... a gallon of 'Dr. Pepper'... Neil honey, what do you want...?' 'Phix are you alright? What has put off your appetite?' 'Oh, I'm fine... I just had to kill and eat that obnoxious bitch Thorena this morning because she wouldn't listen and I'm feeling rather full...')

"Mom- what do you think of this one?" Peter asked.
"Hmmm... double breasted vest, deep cut on the collar, older style lapels... not much removed from a frock coat. This would have been high fashion about 1870- why would you want to wear this?"
"She has a love of antiquities, I'm thinking a 19th century cut might catch her attention..."
"Oh, it WILL catch ATTENTION, alright- this is a re-enactor's cut... this is for somebody who does Civil War or Wild West shows... and I suppose you would want the 'top hat' to go with it?"
"Either that or a derby- oh, and gloves and a cane! AND SPATS! Sweet!"
Emily rolled her eyes.

"Daddy, LOOK!" squealed Dixie at a rather ostentatious bell-skirted production that involved some fourteen yards of material and about three miles of lace. Neil appraised it with a glance-
"You are going to a Junior prom, young lady... did you read the particulars on the price tag? Or perhaps notice that it is satin, silk and brick-a-brac all in off white?"
"Huh?.... Oooooh! 'Weddin' Gown'... I wondered why th' back o' th' skirt dragged on th' ground..."
"Exquisite taste, my dear... but not just yet, I think,"
She giggled and went ransacking through the other offerings. Neil drew a heavy sigh. It was going to be a long evening.
"Daddy...?" she at last ventured, "What about THIS one?"
A deep red vivante top, spilled over a pure white bell skirt, deep scoop in front and back with puffed sleevelets right at the shoulders- accessories included white lace elbow length gloves, satin red dancing slippers and a corsage broach. Neil was quite mesmerized...

It was 1863 when he met Sally- she worked as a nurse at Chimborazo Hospital, where he was recovering from wounds received at Gettysburg. There was a ball that Christmas, and he attended as his leg allowed some activities. She attended as well...

...wearing a nearly identical gown...

Many a young buck aimed at her fancy, but fell short of the mark- many a commissioned fool sought her eye, but she was not impressed by rank alone. She WAS, however, HIGHLY impressed by the First Sergeant of Company 'D', 9th Virginia Calvary... a man known at that time as Mathias Hezekiah Younger... Neil actually preferred 'Marty'... his memories of crinolines and uniforms swaying across a hardwood floor to a brass band swelled back with a vengeance. He was very much in love with this young delicacy, who had brought the (then) fourty year old back to health...
... only to have her die of fever that Spring.
"Daddy...?"
The memory started to fade...
"Daddy...? Daddy- where are you?"
Neil closed his eyes, took a deep breath and let it out... then turned to his daughter.
"I'm alright, dear- this will require a corset and hoopskirts- you might find it rather a bother to put up with- but if you want, I can teach you how to manage,"
"You know about these things?"
"Oh... I've had a few encounters with them..."

Deep plunge with a CORSET? How?

As long as the corset is covering all that open nonsense up, and as long as she hasn't been gifted thrice by the cleavage faerie, perhaps.

If she's too busty, she needs a bodice, and those have heavy duty straps, so she'd have to have a complementary colour scheme, silk jacquard or a brocade, and well made silk laces, unless she's being buckled in, but that tends to look more industrial Steampunk than Southern Belle o' the ball.

Of course, if you get an antique lace shawl, it can drape over the extra reinforcements.
Yanno how some people have Angels/Devils for a conscience? I have a Dark Elf ShadowKnight and a Half Elf Ranger for mine. The really bad part is when they agree on something.

I was looking for a good reference to go with my brain-storm of a phrase;

'Body by Escher', it was in ref to the corset and 'plunging' as described above.

I came across any number of weird items, including this

http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/page/153? ... %2F%3Apage

(btw- Paul's stuff is no where at hard to believe as most of the comix I grew up with...)

19th century corsets came in a variety of styles- one with matching camisole that came right to the nipple line and the same depth on the back... btw, in 1870, that was a 'deep plunge'... the idea of dropping through the cleavage as 'deep plunge' means today would not occur. I should remember that terminology has re-defined over the past 150 years- my error.

There were a few discussions regarding transportation to the Prom... Dixie finally had to accept that riding the 'chugbucket' to the dance and changing there was not an option- instead, Neil pulled out the middle bench of the Suburban and she rode in the back, having learned how to 'hitch up' her hoopskirts in order to sit. A 'fall'- that is, an extension of hair done up to look like longer hair 'done up'- was procure to match her hair color, thus hiding her short locks. Phix taught her the 'language of the fan' (an essential skill to a young lady, especially if she wishes to flirt or fend off unwanted attention), she studied a variety of dances with Bud in the weeks prior (as did Peter) and did all in her power to improve her social skills... with the occasional disastrous screw-up.
Peter, to his credit, already had many of the essential skills ... maybe not 'mastered', but certainly knowledgeable to a level of comfort. He AND his Mother went in circles about what he ought to wear- SHE wanted him in something contemporary- HE wanted something to match the era of Dixie's gown. Dan asked Neil for intervention- the tux rental shop was also a tailor operation- they had Peter's dimensions on file. Neil dug out his old First Sgt. uniform from 1864 and presented it to the tailor, telling him to replicate it to fit Pete... not that there was much difference in size, but the old material was not up to any use. Taking the new uniform, he presented it to Pete as 'What I wore at Gettysburg' and 'It would be a personal honor if he were to wear it,".
Even Emily agreed once she saw how well the uniform fit and how handsome her son looked in it (she would say the exact same thing some eight years hence, but THAT's another story), so it was decided. On the night in question, Neil and Phix, he in a cutaway with tails, her in a red contemporary gown, placed Dixie in the back seat... no small trick, it is to be noted... and from there picked up the 'dashing First Sergeant of Confederate Cavalry' to give proper escort to the dance- Dan and Emily came in their own Subaru.
The band was actually quite well versed with a wide selection of venues- there was an excellent mix of contemporary rock, hip-hop and such along with a fine selection of waltzes and slow romantic tune of many ages. Watching Dixie, in full regalia, with Peter, similarly encumbered (Neil even found an 1860 'wristbreaker' with full harness and showed the boy how to wear it!) doing the wild gyrations of modern music, it was to his credit that he didn't laugh... too loudly. Acting as chaperones, he and Phix saw no need to indulge just yet- especially in what Neil called an 'epileptic seizure set to rhythm'.
Then, Peter walked up to the stage and flashed something folding and green- he returned to Dixie and held out his left hand. She took it with her right. They brought his right hip to her left, and the band fired up with 'Ashokan Farewell', a hauntingly beautiful waltz. The lessons that they had taken were quite evident- their dancing was beautiful.
Phix suddenly felt a wave of deep melancholy. Looking to her side, she saw that Neil had dropped into someplace painful, someplace long ago.
"Neil?"
He looked at her and gave a weak smile.
"Neil, darling... who was she?"
"Someone... someone who died entirely too young and for reasons completely useless," he flatly stated.
"I am sorry, so sorry for you my love- I cannot remove your pain, but I can... distract you..."
Once the waltz finished, Phix skipped up to the band and passed a bit of the same to the band leader- she scampered right back.
"I know that there were many others- I will not take that away from you- but I CAN remind you of where you are right now-
....do you Samba?"
A slight Latin beat fired up, then came the words-

You can dance... every dance with the guy who gives you the eye, let him hold you tight,
you can smile, every smile for the man who holds your hand 'neath the pale moonlight,
but don't forget who's taking you home and in who's arms you're gonna be,
SOOOOO darlin'- save the last dance for me...

The melancholy disappeared like morning fog...

Peter was watching Dixie's parents samba to 'Save the Last Dance for me'-
"Geez, I wish I could dance like that," he commented.
"The samba? Here now- it's rat simple- step...lift, lift, step... lift, lift, right... lift, lift, left... lift, lift, right... lak I said, it's simple,"
"Your folks look like they've done it professionally- and they are so in love with each other, I mean, any idiot could see that,"
"Of course they are in love with each othuh- Daddy choked Mama into submission, even though Mama was tryin' to kill him. I really don't understand how thayt wurks, but they are bonded through eternity... they cannot live without each other. Hey, I've had to 'soundproof' mah room 'cause of them,"
"What do you... OH! Uh... are you serious?"
"Very... Momma gets ... LOUD... and has shattered things,"
"Thrown them?"
She looked directly into Peter's eyes, "by her howling, you numbskull- she's a right vocal lover,"
"Dixie, that's kinda... no, that's REALLY- TOO MUCH INFORMATION!"
"Y' think so? She IS a sphinx..." and here she flashed her feral eyes for a moment, "an' SO AHM AH... y' mayt wanna 'member thayt, iffen we continues t' date..."
He looked back into her eyes... "So... if we want this to go further..."
"You better be able to whup my ass... an' if you do, you better be ready t' keep me,"
THAT required some thought...

" 'Let's just go stag', you say, 'we don't need dates', you say... well, the HELL you say! I've rented this stupid outfit, paid through the nose for a ticket and there are NO STAG WOMEN HERE!!!" Mark Rains lambasted Lance Valencia for about the tenth time.
"OK,OK- I WAS WRONG!!! GET OFF MY CASE!!! I spent as much money as you, in case you didn't notice. I'm ready to call it quits- how about you?"
"Yea, this sucks eggs... let's go to your place and play on the X-Box all night... who is that at the door? KATHY HOFFER?!? But... where's Bill Young?"
"They broke up... DAMN, she looks fine! I'm on that,"
"The HELL you are! I saw her first!"
"Dammit, Mark- don't make me go 'beastie' on your ass! They'll be sanding you off the courts for at least a week!"
"Oh THAT'S mighty big talk- I can turn you 'extra crispy' without even breaking a sweat,"
"What in the seven hells are you two arguing about now?" Debbie Fox asked.
Both Juniors stopped and stared, dumbfounded, at the petite blond before them- it was known she wasn't dating anyone. Mark gave a quick, sidelong glance at Lance, then offered,
"Hi, Debbie- would you care to dance?"
Somewhat startled, Debbie recovered herself, looked Mark up and down, then smiled-
"Sure,"- then grabbing Mark's hand, they both hit the dancefloor.

Lance stood there, jaw hanging loose... until he remembered Kathy was unattended.

He pursued...

'Last Dance' finished out, and Neil proudly led Phix off the floor.
"You are always just what I need- thank you," he whispered.
"As you have been for me, dearest- as you have been for me- you, who has seen generations of warfare, countless deaths and more misery than any of your species... yet you still mourn for one who you lost almost two centuries ago? 'Twas two centuries I mourned for you... and had not the courage to love again until you came back," she purred.
"Hah... more like no-one had the courage to court you! Remember- when I gave you a walloping, I had no idea what would transpire afterwards... and I do not complain by any means... you had challenged me and it was not then nor will it ever be in my nature to back down, especially when I figured death would take me soon enough anyway,"
"Ahhh- but my point is this- you thought me lost, yet had the courage to give your heart again... this is beyond my understanding,"
"My dear, this is the nature of the human heart... it is at once our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. We can heal, we can forgive, we can love as long as we draw breath... should we choose to do so. There ARE those of my kind who choose NOT to do so... they live imprisoned in a hell of their own making. And no, you cannot erase the pain of old losses... but YOU certainly have the ability to MUTE them,"

All-in-all, the Prom went well. Castela slipped out of chaperone mode a few times to dance with Taug... exactly what might transpire there had yet to fully develop... Old Mr. Meadows was there as many of his old charges were either now in high school or acting as chaperone because they were alumni... retirement seemed to suit him... Monica Villarreal showed up to gush over her God-daughter and check out her beau... Kathy and Buck Alexander made a brief appearance because Castela left her bank card at her Mother and Step-Father's apartment... Shelly Epimethus came by late in the evening, only because she was in the area and wanted to say hi to a few old friends... finally, things wound down, and the chaperones( led by Neil) sang "Those were the days" before they closed the doors.

To say the least, it was exactly the magic that a junior prom ought to be.
