Re: I'm about to nuke my hard drive(s)!

I used to dual boot linux and windows, long ago, in a galaxy far, far next door. Nowadays I use Linux for my primary system (laptop, which travels with me), I have Windows on a desktop that's used for business (because the data recovery software companies, et al, refuse to create Linux versions), an...

Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays

I hope that everyone here has had a good Christmas, with family or friends, and stays safe through the New Year.

Hopefully by mid-January, at the latest, I'll have moved most of my web sites and forums to hardware, if not newer, at least faster, with far more memory and disk space.

Re: Arecibo go boom

In this case, there's something that most people just don't want to acknowledge. It was built over 50 years ago, using _Department of Defense_ money. That means that they initially though there was some benefit to the structure to do with warfare. Either attacking or defending. It might have been ve...

Re: Some parents throw out your comic books...

I can see both sides, really.

One sees that stuff as being garbage, and it _is_ their house, not his storage facility.

The other is the owner of the property, who had an assumption that once he was capable of being completely on his own, he would retrieve all of his belongings without expectations.

Honestly, I don't know. I know he's still around.

I have a box I need to ship to him in the next couple of days; I'll try to get him to stop in and say hello.

Re: March 12, 2020 (aka COVID-19 thread)

Locking this thread down as well. It would be one thing to actually be focusing on SARS-COV-2 and COVID-19, but just skimming through the posts, I keep seeing far to many ad-hominum political attacks, rather than useful discourse and information dispersal. Feel free to create another thread on the t...

Locking thread down as being excessively political, and not in a particularly useful way.

Re: March 12, 2020 (aka COVID-19 thread)

2) The '.1%' that people like to quote appears to ONLY be deaths directly related to the influenza virus. The real mortality index is because of viral pneumonia. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm The death toll for at least 4 consecutive weeks was 10%. not 1%, not .1%. 1...

Re: March 12, 2020 (aka COVID-19 thread)

A lot of news shouting has been without context, so here's some numbers for you: The death rate from the Swine Flu/ H1N1 was about 2%. Available numbers from the current Cornoavirus is about 2-3% The "regular" flu death rate is in the 1-2% range. I think your third line has figures that h...

I'm trying to see if I can edit his profile to mark "Deceased" on it. I may have to change the password and do it from logging into the account. Oddly enough, even though I'm in Houston - never met the man. it's the nature of today's society. Too busy to connect with something/someone tha...

Re: More Stuff

I found out why my mom got fired. Apparently, when she went on vacation in July, one of the guys made one of the women uncomfortable, and nobody told my mom about it, so because she didn't do anything about it, they fired her. Sounds like she needs to contact her union. We just had our lease termin...

I'm working, right now, on setting up the site on another server, so that I can move the forum to different hardware/newer operating system.

Hopefully that'll let me also use SSL and some additional plugins.

No - he was a food chemist primarily {as that dissertation would indicate} and he specialised in powders. He apparently had a major hand in developing the mixes Dunkin' used, and he worked out how to make powdered sugar stick to a doughnut. I don't know if that's more fun or less than the Mathemati...

Very good but terrible for you. Not as bad as the guy I knew who would take pork fatback, deep fry it in melted fat, slather it with butter, and then eat that as his meal. Sounds like what they'd serve at the local pool hall. (Rural area, outside of Houston. Typical East Texas. Yes, they had jars o...

Personally, I can't stand paprika on most stuff. Deviled eggs is about it. I don't even like "Dry Roasted Peanuts" from most brands because apparently, "Dry Roasted Peanuts" should contain <insert long list of spices here>, peanuts, and salt. What? I thought I was buying _dry roa...
