Re: More Stuff

It's been rather quiet around here, so I'll throw out a "What I did this summer" post. Back in August I told the people at work that I’d be gone for two weeks. Well, I did give an earlier heads up to those that needed to know. Took off on a road trip to New Mexico and Colorado. First stop ...

Re: More Stuff

Ha! The canteen pouch I ordered arrived. While it is certainly different from the canteen pouches I was issued in basic, it will hold the metal cup with the older metal canteen (not sure how old, but it definitely predates the plastic ones with the drinking valve that connects to a gas mask), and I...

Re: More Stuff

That nose kinda reminds me of something in a sci-fi movie - Space Wars , or something like that? http://forum.wapsisquare.com/download/file.php?id=1991 Does B/W image help with memory? ;) BTW, the yellow color on the frame is a reflection from a tow tractor parked in front of the aircraft. Re: More Stuff

One more from Doc showing the nose art, faithful to the original. Also included are a couple of Glacier Girl from Wings Over Houston 2009. They managed to beat out most of the dents reasonably well. I think GG changed owners soon after, hasn't been on the airshow circuit for a while. At least not to...

Re: More Stuff

. . . Right now I tend to have about a 15-20% keep rate for photos. . . . That's quite good! We used to figure 2% was fair. The heavy lens and moving subjects are challenging to work with for me. Maybe if I was able to graduate from 12oz curls to something heavier, I might develop the upper body st...

Re: More Stuff

Out of curiosity, what shutter speed did you use, in order to get the slight motion blur on the propellers like that? Those are some nice photos. Thanks. I had shutter set at 160. Lens is a 200-500 telephoto. Nikon equipment. Right now I tend to have about a 15-20% keep rate for photos. The heavy l...

Re: More Stuff

So - Fifi has a companion now! Shame Ice Queen burned during recovery, but at least they were able to salvage Glacier Girl. Good to keep those memories alive! The name of the B-29 that burned was Kee Bird, it was a tragic story all around. Especially when one of the recovery crew died due to compli...

Re: More Stuff

More adventures! "Doc", one of the two airworthy WW2 B-29 bombers was in the Houston area and I managed to get a few decent shots of it in the air and on the ground. The airborne pics were during takeoff and landing. I wasn't able to wait for a cockpit tour due to the length of the line an...

A few more from Elissa. Night atmosphere, Texas flag on the mainmast, and her figurehead.

Re: More Stuff

Howdy, buckaroos. It's Hansontoons adventure time again. Here are some shots from my experience on the tall ship Elissa out of Galveston. She's a square rigged barque built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland. She has an iron hull and was originally only sail powered until an engine was installed around 1...

Re: Brain Scars 2021-02-22

Question: How? We know what and who and why... but how ? Possibly a standard entrenching tool (they're very common even outside the various military organizations), or maybe NSN# 5120-01-416-8568. Or, given that Kath was an anthropologist at the time, I wouldn't rule out a bit of impromptu flintkna...

Yes, I was looking at the profile and thought "I've seen this before..." while trying to visualize how Lakshmi would look after Mr. Taylor's changes in drawing style.

Re: More Stuff

I use tung oil on the walnut shaft walking sticks I make. Five applications and I call it good. It is amazing how the wood grain comes to life when in sunshine. I've never put any shellac over the tung oil since I figure that after a while if the owner of the stick wants to bring back the "shi...

Re: More Stuff

A somewhat similar process can be done when finishing woods. I've played around a bit and have gotten good results using an old traditional method - several coats of a penetrating-then-drying oil (I use pure tung oil), let it dry and cure well, and then surface-finish with a few thin layers of clea...
