Re: Apologies for downtime

Ooooh, yes. Especially when you're dealing with putting patches into code. "Read from the laptop, type into the server.." Try it with an octal front panel sometime...and yes, I used to do it on PDP-11s... and 8s. And a few Sperry-Univac behemoths... :) I once talked with a man who once pr...

We bought a Mazda 5 minivan. Yes, I know it's currently out of production, but there are a lot out there. Sliding rear doors, not a big as a minivan, four captains chairs plus a third row bench seat.

Re: Apologies for downtime

I can't remember how many words per minute I typed, back in high school, but I can attest to the reusability of the skill... It's so much easier (and faster) to touch type a long text than to hunt and peck... It's particularly useful when you are trying to either transcribe written material (i.e. a...

Re: Apologies for downtime

Typing was my worst subject in high school. Grades kept dropping, because I got up to 35 wpm (on a manual typewriter) and plateaued for the rest of the semester. Gods being the evil-minded jokers that they are, my doom was sealed. That seems somewhat ironic, considering your username whic...

Some of the information signs on the Pennsylvania Turnpike are inconsistent from section to section. Brother and I have been arguing for decades over whether it's really necessary to be a lert, or if it's sufficient to just keep one in the trunk. *Hits the gas toward the next exit.* I kee...

Well, I used to be able to do 30-40 words a min on an IBM Selectric... Slow. 90wpm for me, and my mother was about 30 wpm faster than that. Susan, my first wife, who did at least 120 wpm, used to watch me knocking out about 30 wpm, shake her head, and wander off muttering "Nobody should be as ...

Well, everything I've read says it takes up to four hours for the DE to actually kill the bugs; it's a physical effect, after all. Not a neurotoxin.

Apologies for downtime

The power supply in the server went blooey, and then the boot drive went wonky. So, I had to scavenge parts from the new server I'm building, replace the power supply, and clone the boot drive to a good one. Everything should be okay now - might even be a wee bit faster on the newer drive. However, ...

Has the DE been working for you at killing them?

I know the cockroach that I nailed yesterday was moving pretty slowly.

DDT, to me, has two specific locations where it would be beneficial.

In attics, and under houses. Both areas where animals are not wanted to be nesting anyway, and there is little to no weather movement.

Re: More Stuff

Just remember that it can take the fleas over a day to actually drown in the water; often the "dead" fleas in water will revive after you've poured them out. So be sure to kill the carcasses extra dead. Flush them :) Won't that annoy the alligators in the sewers? No, our alligators live i...

Take a large diameter pan (like a serving tray, or even better one that would go under a water heater), cover the bottom with quarter/half inch of water, put a couple or so drops of dishwashing soap in the water, swish it around to spread the soap, set the pan on the floor in middle of room, set up...

Re: More Stuff

You might find that a treatment with Precor might be helpful. It doesn't kill fleas directly, but it keeps the juvenile fleas from successfully maturing to adulthood... they fail to molt and they end up dying naturally without maturing to the biting stage. You can buy Precor as part of a combined f...

Re: More Stuff

The weird part? I've put out some basic dish soap and plate flea traps, mostly to identify which rooms have resident fleas. Nothing. nada. I'm only seeing about two to four a day hatching out. I suspect they're hatching, getting on the cats, and basically dropping dead. You might find that a treatm...

Re: More Stuff

I don't know if birds qualify enough as 'mammals' for bed bugs to survive on their blood. Oh, they definitely can. Bed bugs are a problem in the poultry industry, and just as much of a nuisance to get rid of. I'm dealing with a flea infestation myself. Now that the cats have seresto collars, the fl...
