Re: Politics in Alabama is a full-contact sport, apparently

Oh, Rizzo was a pig, no question. I was at the counterbicentennial on July 4, 1976. Rizzo had practically surrounded the route of the march and the park with cops and rooftop snipers to protect the city against, basically, a herd of Yippie stoners with a parade permit. He wasted a bargeload of money...

Wilson Goode bombed Philadelphia, destroyed an entire block, and still got reelected.

Don't think I'll live long enough for that to ever make sense.

Should have invited your sister over for the barbecue.

Seriously, that is not good about the dogs. Attacking livestock is still a capital offense for dogs in a lot of places. Traditional wisdom is that once dogs learn to kill livestock, they won't stop.

Re: What They Have 2015-08-05

Wait...are dark matter and anti-matter the same thing? Not in our universe, no. Antimatter has been observed. The existence of dark matter is inferred, because its mass is required to explain the observed movement of galaxies since the Big Bang, but we don't know what it is. Possibly some type of m...

Re: Yes, i know it's a big ugly bug

I remember from the Golden insect guide we had as kids that there are native stinkbugs, but am not sure I've ever seen one. Brown marmorated stink bugs, I've seen. Probably are a few lurking in the corners here right now. They're everywhere. It's worse outside of town. Some people can sweep them off...

Spent a weekend at a state park recently. Really enjoyed one notice on the bulletin boards: "Coolers are NOT bear resistant." :D

Black bears, though--not nearly as aggressive as grizzlies.

Re: Durable Hot Dog Buns?

I grew up in Germantown, not very far from either Norristown or Conshohocken. . . . my parents and grandparents always called them zeps. Never heard of zeps, but I do know of the great truth: The further you go from Philadelphia, the worse the sub/grinder/hoagie-type sandwiches deteriorate. It was ...

They haven't been able to prove that it's actually harmful to consume. For some reason, every time somebody orders one and drinks it, and the greasy glowing smoke dissipates, there's never enough of a body left for the coroner to make a definitive ruling as to probable cause of death. "Habeus ...

I learn something here every day. That reeks about the service in that liquor store. One of the upsides of the strange Pennsylvania state retail liquor monopoly is that any outlet can get you anything that is available in the system, at the same price. Low-end products are overpriced relative to oth...

Re: Durable Hot Dog Buns?

Hoagie rolls are, in my opinion, smack-dab in the middle of the Goldilocks zone for bratwursts. That's a shame. I was thinking that brats are bigger than hotdogs, like kielbasa. Have they got a longer Italian-style baguette loaf that you could cut in half? A lot of people must like the squooshy won...

I'd say that if the hoagie rolls work, go with them. I have done my own baking for more than 10 years now. (In fact, my ex says I'm a master baker. Or something like that. ) I'm also vegetarian, and one thing I always notice when eating at bars and restaurants is sandwiches made with bread...
