Technically, there is no Iowa bourbon. "Bourbon" is a denomination of origin. By definition, it's distilled in Kentucky. Actually, Wikipedia says "Bourbon's legal definition varies somewhat from country to country, but many trade agreements require the name bourbon to be re...

It looks like you've got a pretty skewed view of those who would join the military, because not one person that I met when I was going through basic joined because they thought war was glorious or anything like that. In fact, if anyone said anything like that, the drill sergeants set them straight ...

- in Houston, they've been destroying roads to put in bicycle lanes. Speaking as an occasional cyclist, I hate cycle lanes. They almost invariably put them in between the traffic lanes and any on-road parking, so you still run the risk of smacking into suddenly-opened doors and have to avoid cars p...

They ranged from about 80K to 600K, but some could be flipped, thus doubling the storage capacity. I'm not sure they ever made double-sided 8-inch drives.jwhouk wrote:8 inch diskettes? OMG I think they only held 640K, didn't they?

Well... isn't this what they came looking for? Don't be rude, say 'Hello'... There were only two situations where ghostly apparitions frightened me- one I already mentioned was Gettysburg. Another is where the individual apparently was unaware of their demise and saw me as an intruder. Others were ...

Field Hockey players are all right-handed.
They don't make left-handed hockey sticks.
Fencers, on the other hand, tend to be left-handed more commonly than the general populace, moreso the higher up the rankings you look. In the world champs, lefties outnumber righties most years.

Nah, if I was that concerned about it I’d enlist my real hacker buddy and he’d make the target computer release all it’s magic blue smoke. Someone who knows what they're doing can find out the street address of your average troll. A really good way to make them leave you alone is to send ...

Maybe Valerie can get a decoration like Bia's diadem , only with multiple expressions available on it. There was a character in Marvel's Excalibur who had a diadem which reflected his emotions. Also a villain in Adam Warren's Dirty Pair had a headband which showed his current thoughts (in words). T...

I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread for upcoming cons/events/etc.
As a starter, if anyone is in New Zealand, you might want to check out the Oamaru Steampunk Festival: https://www.steampunknz.co.nz/

I recently read Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1) by Gail Garriger. Wikipedia describes it as a steampunk paranormal romance novel, which I can hardly improve upon. It's set in an alternate Victorian England which includes werewolves and vampires as well as steam-powered airships. There are four mo...

I rather liked Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It's not a great movie, but it's fun, has some really pretty effects, and the plot is at least as good as any of the Star Wars movies (not, admittedly, that that's saying a lot...) I also saw the Fifth Element, and I think Valerian is signi...

Hi Dave. Our posts overlapped, but I just had to respond. The Witches of Karres is one of my all-time favourite comfort reads, up there with Courtship Rite by Donald Kingsbury and A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge. I suspect a Monica/Telzey fight would be like a gunfight - all down to initiative....
