I like the Weber/Evans description of the gates . . . especially the way that trains can enter the gate in opposite directions on the same track . . .

Re: More Stuff
I had a large western spruce hit my house a couple of years ago . . . the top three-quarters of it, anyway. Did no detectable damage, luckily. Apparently the butt of the broken-off section hit the ground, then it slowly fell over on the house . . . and went through two smaller trees on the way. the n...

Re: Castela's kitty?
That's the title I used when I sent it to friends, but here it has to be Castela's kitty.
If I'd posted it on El Goonish Shive, it would have been Box's kitty.

Odd . . . here, at least four of the chain grocery stores - including WallyWorld - are supposed to have Red Rose . . .

I haven't had Red Rose in many years . . . it used to be my late mother's preferred tea.

In the machine shop we used to use an old crackpot for melting the Plasti-Coat we coated end mills and special cutters with for storage . . . dip the tooling, pull it out, let it cool and there's a layer of oily plastic on the tool, which protected both the edge on the tool, and protected the finger...

Diamonds are also very useful for core-drilling in rock . . . largish ballas stones are especially good, thought they're so tough to cut that they aren't much use for gems. they're also pretty ra...
