Now, careful and selective use of DDT (e.g. cautious, limited spraying of indoor surfaces) does still seem to have a useful role... Exactly. Interior and other specialized uses could have mostly eradicated malaria, and was doing so at the time it was banned for all uses. Baby v bathwater. Even thal...

I'm sure this has been mentioned a LOT, but...

Acacia's got legs for days. Not sure what she does with them overnight though.

When I first heard the line about "The corn was as high as an elephant's eye," I thought -- that's what, maybe 3 inches? Four? Why are they so happy about it? Was there a drought last year?

Followed the search to the wiki for Madman Muntz and saw the Muntz Jet - a snazzy looking car indeed! But geez -- 4000 lbs with a 160 hp engine? That's what -- zero to 60 in, like, today? It did look good, though, sort of a cross between the early Ford T-Birds and Citroen of that era, all behind a h...

I worked with the Navy on Guam for a few years back in the late 70s. I dare say that story is one of the career field staples.

Re: More Stuff

The stories about removing parts until they (sort of) work remind me of a Navy Electronic Technician story I heard: Seems the new guys were troubleshooting a radar system which was behaving very badly. They'd get one module tuned up and another would fail - fix that and a third would go sour, poppin...

Re: Update 2019-06-28

I have a very unusual First Name and an alternative spelling of the more otherwise common Last Name. One time, when I'd gotten pulled over for driving too fast (and getting pulled over for it), the cop wrote my last name as what he assumed it was spelled like- and I corrected him. So he added "AKA"...

Furshlugginer publishing industry . . . . No, more like Muggeridge's Law When Malcolm Muggeridge was the editor of the British satirical magazine Punch in the early 1960s, Khrushchev had announced he was going to tour England alongside its prime minister. Muggeridge wrote up a list of the silliest ...

Good stuff!

And I just noticed that Photobucket has returned the images to the Fan Art thread! Of course, they just HAD to watermark them with a big blob letting you know that Photobucket hosted the image, but at least the stuff is still visible! Yay (mostly)!

Taz - thank you for reminding me about Port Chicago. All I could think of at the time were Halifax and Texas City, but couldn't recall the third.

And of course, it's even worse when the stuff getting all poofy are actual explosives! During WW 1, an ammunition ship in Halifax, Nova Scotia went kaboom - 3 Kiloton worth -- the largest non-nuclear explosion ever prior to nukes. Hiroshima was 14 Kt, Nagasaki was 20 Kt by comparison. If I'm reading...

Re: A Passing

Even after all this time, I can't get over the lack of tact shown by my supervisor... Then there's the Army story about the Sergeant addressing his troops. "All you married men can have furlough this weekend. Not so fast there, Wilson!" Some people simply don't know how to break bad news to others.
