Now normally I'd take "grandma was evil," as simple teenage hyperbole and take in to account "insane" as being the driving factor behind any "evil" seeming tendencies. However this being Wapsi Square and deep in the everyday paranormal... On a scale from "Baba Yaga on a good day" to "Baba Yaga on a...

Heh. My myopia never was that bad, and still isn't. But my astigmatism has gotten really bad.

Used to be I could focus pretty well just by squinting. Well, that (sorta) takes care of the myopia, but it doesn't do squat about astigmatism …

On a side note, I've never really thought about how people with really bad eyesight who wear glasses manage in public pools. Swimming with them on wouldn't be that great of an idea, I'd imagine, and I've heard that wearing contacts in the pool can be a very unpleasant thing. I guess that you don't ...

Of course, a parachute that opens improperly isn't very helpful, while one that is open all of the time would be a considerable hindrance.

And a closed parachute makes a nice pillow.

No, merely keeping an open mind.

I'd say the "consensus reality" and fictions' posited conformance to it are the entities produced by unnecessary multiplication.

You're ignoring the possibility that "consensus reality" is multiplying entities unnecessarily – or failing to multiply entities necessarily.

Or both.

Actually, it does apply - it's the principle of parsimony - assume no variance fro consensus reality that the author has not established. That's not Occam's Razor. Occam's Razor is the principle of parsimony - broadly stated "Do not multiply entities unnecessarily" - and it applies to more than pro...

Occam's Razor really doesn't apply to fiction. But fiction, as Twain, Clancy et al have noted, has to make sense. And while within the established setting, chlorinated water does, liquid fairy dust doesn't. Actually, it does apply - it's the principle of parsimony - assume no variance fro consensus...
