Re: Bad Jokes II

The "J" is putting up with inner-loop life in Houston the best she can. Her previous life at the Casa de Inundación was rather different. it's been a year since we moved and she has accepted her current lot in life- as long as rawhide chews are on hand. The area we have available for walks consists...

Re: Schtupid Email Scams

Got a call today - from myself! according to Caller ID. No message on the recording. I wonder why they think anybody is going to believe a call that is an obvious lie from the initial contact.... Sounds like luck of the draw. They try to match the first 6 digits to make you think “wow, that’s a loc...

Re: Ubuntu Studio 19.04 (Linux OS)

What to do after installing any linux. Install ssh install vim-nox (which, stupidly enough, now requires _ruby_ of all things) dpkg-reconfigure dash, to put bash _back_ as the shell of choice install thunderbird, firefox, chrome remote desktop, anydesk install proftpd Copy over all settings from old...

Re: I've been enjoying Game of Thrones

E. E. "Doc" Smith's Subspace Safari was similar to that. It was originally written as a single book, and offered up for publication. There was a bunch of back and forth, and he started rewriting it as _two_ books - Subspace Explorers, and Subspace Encounters. He never finished them. Eventually, the ...

Re: I've been enjoying Game of Thrones

15 years and the author dying, with the last book finished off by someone else, is a bit of a turn off. Conan, anybody? Not quite the same. That's more simply taking a series character and writing more with the character. The Wizard of Oz series was that way, as were Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and in ...

Re: More Stuff

This is why Islam exists as a large scale religion. The Monophysite christians were abused by the Orthodox churge to the point that they pretty much migrated to Islam en-masse. That was almost all of the population of Egypt at the time. That's a large part of the reason why a small group of poorly-...

Re: I've been enjoying Game of Thrones

I liked Wild Cards, but I've never been tempted to pick up Game of Thrones.

For one thing, after the Wheel of Time series, I won't pick up a heavy extended series until it's done. 15 years and the author dying, with the last book finished off by someone else, is a bit of a turn off.

Re: More Stuff

Yeah, Judas has provided some rather difficult problems in the history of theology, in regards to everything from predestination to the nature of Jesus' sacrifice. Which mainstream religious authorities generally resolved by simply ignoring the problems when possible, silencing dissenters, and refu...

So I got a new used car yesterday and I just now I got a call from a robot saying my warranty may expire soon. I let it go to a human, and the (Indian accented) guy asked me for the year, make, and model of my car. I asked them if they could confirm what company was providing the warranty. *click* ...

Re: More Stuff

I always felt that Judas got a bum rap. I mean, the entire _point_ of Jesus's existence was to be martyred. Otherwise, he would have been as forgotten as the other dozens of prophets. So, who do you turn to, to make sure that things happen the way they need to? Your most trustworthy, and least brain...

Sounds like they'll have to get up there and put up a surplus Ringling Brothers' tent. It'll be the right size, roughly the right shape, and keep the water from flowing into the building. Yes, it's not going to be simple, but doable. They'll have to put it together off site, and mostly drop it into ...

Re: 3rd party Batteries for Older Laptops

I'd have to go back and check on the brands I've bought. In general, I've found that ebay batteries are a crapshoot, but generally worth what you pay for them. Amazon batteries tend to have a bit better quality, but you pay for it. The ones in my Dell Latitudes are solid batteries, but they did cost...

Well, they have so much information on it, at least it can be physically restored to an almost identical condition - and a whole lot faster than it was constructed initially.

I haven't read any of the news reports yet - I'll wait a bit and see if they come up with how it happened.
