Re: More Stuff

Check the fluid level (assume it's automatic)? Was it acting glitchy at all before it quit?

With automatic transmissions, either it's something fairly simple and low-cost (like a bad cover gasket), or it may not be worth the price of diagnosis to find out.

Good luck!

Re: More Stuff

You do get used to it. Both living alone and living with people have advantages and drawbacks.

Hope you're staying warm. Nasty cold a lot of places this week.

I make many iterations of vegetarian hot and sour soup, myself. Often when I'm not sure what I'm making when I begin.

I'm not above sleazing out and using whole wheat spaghetti for the noodles, either.

I wish I was that young- I will be 70 in August. I hear ya. In 28 days, I'm turning 39 again (for the 32d consecutive year!), myself. And parole from the publishing gulag has been confirmed, effective February 1. Dave, my dad had congestive heart failure, kept going right to the end but knew it was...

Re: More Stuff

Glad to know that things are going a little better for you. Maintaining a house is way cheaper than renting, and avoiding debt you can avoid is always a good plan. I've never borrowed to buy a car. Drove near-junk cars for decades and found later, when I had more income, that a good 3-year-old car w...

Speaking of helium leaks... https://home.cern/news/news/accelerators/lhc-leak-repair-short-photostory Went through this pretty fast, but I think the takeaway is that CERN doesn't keep duct tape handy. And I've stayed out of the CrossTime Cafe on purpose, because I'm still technically empl...

Yeah, last few posts, got an error message after hitting Submit, but then found the message had posted okay. Error 500, I think.

Re: More Stuff

For mine, this time they sent a tech wearing an Xfinity shirt in an Xfinity van. He determined while still in the van that the modem was not getting good signal, and proceeded to replace an old cable connector and a 3-line splitter outside the house. That fixed it. He disconnected the modem to conne...

I've been having modem/router problems, too. Comcast first told me it was a cable outside my house, then left me hanging 5 days-- I need internet to access my job- --until the "independent contractor" field tech, who was so damn tired or wired that he was about falling asleep on his feet, ...

Ten years ago this morning, we watched my mother take her last breath. By coincidence, my dad's maternal grandmother had died on the same date in 1965, while I was at summer Scout camp for the first time. I'll be thinking of you and your dad, and too many others as well, when I pour the good whiskey...

Re: More Stuff

Just seeing this, Alkarii. My condolences.

As the others said, it helps to just stop for a bit, breathe, and observe. You've got lots of company in this, and we understand.

We are built to go on, and so we do.

Sarge: All my condolences. Hope you and his mother are holding up.

Alkarii: Pretty sure the hospital will tell your dad more about his pancreas than he wants to hear. Hope he takes it to heart. Hang in there.

Re: More Stuff

They've gotten real stingy about pain management.

My maternal grandmother had both legs amputated because of complications from adult-onset diabetes. That was about 50 years ago, and she was in her late 70s. Treatment is a lot better now, and I hope your dad will take it seriously.

Re: More Stuff

Alkarii, how old is your dad? Your family seems pretty fraught. Part of the lore from my own old folks was that trying to help some people who don't want help doesn't help anybody. I don't know your situation that well, but take care of yourself first. If this were a civilized country with a healthc...

I'm not an orbital mechanic, but the whole premise of a hidden planet on the opposite side of the sun is physically impossible, at least for a planet of equal mass. Resonance with the greater masses of the sun and the earth is what keeps small stuff parked at L1. A full-size planet's another conditi...
